Incognito Adventures

There has been much excitement here. Bustle, of a sort, buzzes around every nook and cranny. 'Yeet's of joy are uttered with minimal constraint. Team members diligently tackle tasks with smiles of contentment. Yes, things are certainly looking up at the fun factory. 'What exactly is all the fuss about?' you may ask. Well, our new website of course.   The index, or home page, along with the lairs have been created. Content is being both remastered and crafted offering a professional and clean feel to it. Much of this polishing is made possible by the growing talents of our very own Concept Artist Nathan and his talent with the free program paint.net . With icons of professions, race classifications, as well as a more uniform approach to the design of the lairs, things truly are coming together.    In fact, the work done on the world map in the last couple of months has been staggering. A global trade network has been crafted, capitals have been placed, roads are bein...

Life's Long Hard Road

Image
"Life is what you make of it.", a common adage used to express the way in which we can choose to receive the challenges of this world. Ronald Reagan once said that "Life is one grand, sweet song, so start the music." An awesome outlook. There are countless phrases and anecdotes that impress upon us a sunnyside to a darkened day. But sometimes even the strongest raincoats cannot prevent the rain from dampening your clothes. Spring of last year I separated from my family. Immediately after that my estranged family publicly shamed me. My Immediate brother lost the love of his life to a drug overdose that following summer. The little girl whom I love with all my heart and delivered singlehandedly, okay I used both hands, is no longer talking to me. Upon separation from my girlfriend, I discovered that she had let the utilities fall behind by nearly $2,000 and my hours at work had been cut in half. Life was pretty bleak. Through that storm I stayed the course, I slu...

Into the Nathan-verse

Image
We need more content! Nothing keeps people coming back like content. These days content seems to include everything from dumping liquid on your head to streamers tearing each other down. But Team Epimetheus holds itself to a higher standard. We follow the 'Golden Rule'. Hey don't get us wrong we find much of that stuff just as entertaining as the next guy/gal, but we are not interested in setting a bad example. In fact, we cannot afford to. We represent an idea that has its roots in integrity, maturity, and community. The opposite of putting others down. Besides, there are plenty of other venues to find that sort of 'entertainment'. So to keep everyone abreast of what is going on right now, as you may have noticed we are still constructing the topic-specific blogs. One of the things that are tying us up is that there must be some uniformity in the way links and content are displayed. Ultimately we want each blog to represent its target topic adequately, but s...

Storytime around the campfire

Image
Newpolios    This week I want to talk about the storyline . I was drawn into this fantastical world of myth, magic, and adventures through books. Escaping middle school with dreams about spelunking, discovering boobie traps, and finding hidden treasures leaving behind the troubles of life. The first book I recall reading by choice alone was Sword of Shannara , by Terry Brooks. I was about eleven then and was attending the Auburn Middle School.    That first book began a passion for reading that fed my desire to learn. It has been a boon in so many ways since. I have read to escape the troubles of family life and to distract myself from the days in the solitude of incarceration. I have read to learn and have been blessed to have access to a world wide web. Folks a passion for learning, or educating oneself if you will, is a powerful thing in this informational age. Where I once had to suffer questions no one could answer, I now have access to the ac...

Navigating a Fantastical World

The edge of the horizon is always as fast as you are, but the way back is not always clear. As we continue to develop the continent of Aborlon the need to quickly access references and visual aides grow. In tandem, the content that we are creating to display the game growth also provides more of the vision of Epimetheus for contributors. In other words: by creating this new page Fantastical World we made something that we can use as reference and a neat way to watch the game grow. If you have any suggestions, comments, tips or even a piss-n-vinegar complaint then please feel free to leave a comment below, email me at nathan.epimetheus@gmail.com or register with our forum. Please, spread the word about our unique project, become part of an experience. - Nathan

Crafting Madness Made Simple

Image
What good is a sandbox world without crafting? It would sort of be like removing the sand part of a sandbox, would it not?   Maybe that would be more like playing in a pool. Remembering the delighted 8 years old who spent hours in the sand with matchbox cars, Tonka trucks, and G.I. Joes I cannot help but smile at the unrestrained imagination of a young boy. Anywho, resources that are grown in the world of Epimetheus or harvested from the depths of the lands, are used to produce goods throughout the game. This requires a system of ' basic resources'  to ' advanced goods' recipe trees that must tie directly into both skill trees and classes. To that end, much of what is being done to expand ' Crafting ' will continue to evolve as other trades and classes are fleshed out. There are 19 trades that specialize in the manufacturing of goods. Apothecary , Toxicologists , Alchemists , Potters , Woodworkers , Artisans , Carpenters , Masons , Architects , Tinsmiths ...

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm...

This week instead of writing an actual article I will be going through the task list and updating it, along with the accompanying graphs and points. Let me share this: considering the long road ahead of us, I cannot help but wonder if there will be a contributor who tries to earn the most points. An interesting consideration really, though improbable. However, simply making such a statement in of itself could be the challenge that nurtures the motivation from someone to attempt it. Things that make you go "Hmmmm". Back to the topic at hand: Tasks, points, and graphs. Many tasks have been accomplished but there are still plenty to go around. Mostly the tasks that we have worked on were to finish the blog and peripherals, which make our goals achievable. Nonetheless, the current state of our blog is pretty impressive (I am a little biased). To be honest, I haven't heard of a single complaint aside from the unsecured warning that some devices receive for accessing the mob...

Introducing the Flags of Five Aborlon nations

Image
The Elven Flag of the Nation of Quistenite The nation of Quistenite consists of 9 territories: Heavens Hearth, Ear Song, Sartoui, Gaias Bosom, Ziaster, Sea Crest, Sea Fortune, Sandy Glade and the smallest territory, Moondew.  The Cyclops Flag and the Barrens The Barrens are populated by 5 Cyclops Clans: Bruisers, Rock Munchers, Mighty Clan, Water Clan and the Medicine Clan.  Fighty-Fight Fight Place is  on the border of  Kokotun and is named for its war ravaged state. The Cyclops and Trolls have been at war for hundreds of Legras (years) .  The Troll Flag of the Nation of Kokotun The nation of Kokotun consists of 6 Clans: Marble Trunks, Bolder Backs, Sharp Tongues, Running Rocks, Bristle Bellys and the Trolls of Big Blech Bounty. The Sacred Hearth Stone Grove is in the heart of Kokotun and is considered haloed ground.   The Goblin Flag of the Nation of Nobygoo The nation of Nobyg...

Updates!

Image
Good morning, afternoon or evening everyone. I would like to take a moment to discuss the changes that we have completed in the last few weeks. Amazing feet, if I say so myself, all things considering. First I will go over the things that we have done to make this blog support the needs of this project, then I will tell y'all about the RL things that have made our tasks here... an opportunity to grow. This blog was created as a place where people could watch and participate in the development of an actual online game. To do that we knew we were going to need to break this down into tasks and that we would need more people. The decision to seek artistic and creative contributions from others was made early in the pre-production stage of development and thus the need for a method of accepting those contributions became a task. Please understand that I am not a business major, I am a software major with an expected graduation date of 2024. That's four years before the proje...

The Birth of a Nation

Maybe you can remember history class because it was only a few hours ago, or can never forget it because it was the most exciting course in your curriculum. Personally, I dreaded history class and found it difficult to remember all of the events, dates, and characters involved. That was in part because it was American history where I was instead bedazzled by European folklore. The lore of elves, gnomes, goblins, and trolls captured my attention and nurtured my imagination.    Now here I am writing a pseudo-history for the world I dreamed up as a child and I cannot help but chuckle at the frustrations and shortsightedness of my youth. Backstories are an integral part of making a world come to life. The Zelda series is an excellent example of a franchise that fleshed out a deeper backstory as it added depth to their games. Originally there were a handful of mobs and bosses but no real depth. We are bringing Epimetheus to life in a way that requires an explanation...

Finger Painting Appaloosa

Image
The last couple of weeks I have been working on artistic contributions as there is a strong need for graphical content. With the intention of getting people involved, I am providing images to show the direction we are headed in. Also, I hope to show how easy it is to contribute. In this weeks post I want to show off what I have been working on and assure you that I have no professional education in art or the use of the two programs I use the most: paint and paint.net. When the concept for Epimetheus began to solidify in my mind I knew that I wanted a world that offered many different aspects to role-playing. This meant a need for variety so that players could personalize their experience, but a variety of what? Well, the answer is everything. We decided to have a large variety of playable races of different sizes, appearances, behaviors, cultures, government types, languages, strengths and weaknesses all in one playable world. Having many races to choose from is a nice feature an...

The Missing Link

Image
Irony has no bounds. No sooner had I publicly committed to uploading new content every week, then I found myself locked out of my Google+ account. Therefore I would like to start this post with my utmost apologies for not being able to meet my obligations sooner. Rest assured I will be placing fail-safes to avoid such an embarrassing matter again. Nonetheless, I have been working to keep the content flowing regardless of my inability to upload it. Some changes have been made: we are now placing morale alignment more in the peripheral gameplay and stepping up the grouping of Men, Monsters, Fairie and God-born. This decision was made in light of the intended feel of the game. Our focus is on creating a world where a player's avatar may die for good but leaves a legacy for their children to inherit. In essence, the player is choosing to play a bloodline more so than a character. The intent is to keep the game fresh by placing them in a position to try new professions and specializa...

The Concept

Image
Imagine an open world sandbox game that allowed a player to earn his way from a greasy tavern to the mantle of a god. Where paths to success are as robust and varied as the universe itself. A game where the players build the largest portion of content as part of their experience through various trades and player-to-player quests.    And in this sandbox world existed a chaotic ecosystem where wildlife, as well as plant-life, grew old, procreated and leveled-up. A place where npc's battled each other as well as players to attain their own levels, while live players vied for the same experience. Perhaps in Epimetheus, when the bad guy wins they take a portion of your experience points. this could lead to bosses that dominate players for years before defeated.    Because the game is a simulated world, complete with its own ecosystem, some resources will be limited whilst others renewable. Players and NPCs alike will compete for their local resources. In...

A Brief Overview

Image
There are nine core attributes that provide the fundamental basis of all active avatars:  wisdom , intelligence , luck , strength , dexterity , constitution , charisma , stamina ,   and,  magix .     These nine attributes are known as the Nine Aspects of Power . Those aspects comprise the three parts of a character's persona: Mind , Body , and Soul .   The Races of Epimetheus and their Gods     There are  27 different Races   in  Epimetheus ; each one unique in culture, appearance, specialized abilities, attributes as well as habitats and languages. There are nine races for each major alignment:  good ,  neutral,  and  evil .    In addition to the major  Races  of  Epimetheus , there are 15  subraces ; five in each alignment.
